Discovering Competitive Club Sports on Campus

Updated: May 20

Many colleges and universities do have regionally competitive Club Teams in several sports.  Collegiate Club Teams are a step up from the Intramural games most colleges and universities offer and many play competitively in regional leagues. They may or may not have a paid coach or have some level of financial support from the college or university and are almost always student organized and managed.

If you know some college(es) that interest you, then just go their website’s section on Recreational Activities and there you should find your answer.   You may be pleasantly surprised to find that yes, not only does the team compete regionally, but it is affiliated with a national organization for that sport!  Although not registered with NCAA or NAIA, many club teams are affiliated with governing bodies such as the United States College Ski Association or USA Ultimate.  USA Ultimate’s mission, for instance, is “to advance the sport of Ultimate (Frisbee) in the U.S. by enhancing and promoting Character, Community, and Competition.”

The best thing is that Club Sports offer you either a new and challenging opportunity to master a new sport and meet new friends or just  continue to play your own favorite sport and find others who also love it.   Quidditch? Kayaking? Rock Climbing?  Billiards?  Rugby? Skiing?  Cycling?   What’s Your Passion?
